FREDZ
There is no doubt that we are dealing with a new kind of artist when we first encounter a very young artist like Fredz. We’ll emphasize the term “encounter”—not just “listening”—because Fredz is a phenomenon in a class of his own, a generational artist, to be sure, and a multifaceted musician who urgently needs to be placed in the unclassifiable—and perhaps even elusive—category. This is good news at a time when record labels are increasingly eager to pigeonhole their young protégés into specific formats rather than letting them spread their wings or venture off the beaten path of pop music, which has been done to death in every possible way.
What makes Fredz unique—aside from his musical qualities, which we’ll come back to—is undoubtedly his jack-of-all-trades nature, his relentless craftsmanship with sound, and his status as a Quebec “zebra” utterly unwilling to be confined to a box—even a gilded one—labeled “prodigy.” For this young man is a true prince of paradox. His rap seems to come more from a starry galaxy than from a city; his flow has a smooth quality and never sounds harsh; and while he’s an authentic mirror of his generation, he never resorts to clichés about it in his lyrics nor does he caricature it, as so many others do.
Are you ready to give it a try? Are you ready to open the windows of your mental and musical landscape? Yes?! Great, because Fredz promises you this: starting March 8, the release date of his new LP, “Demain, il fera beau…”.
